Arnica Gelicon

arnicaicon: Although this remedy usually comes to mind for injuries, it can also be very helpful for discomfort that comes with gout. Pain is sore and bruise-like, and it hurts to walk. The person may be afraid to be approached or touched, because of pain.

Belladonnaicon: Sudden onset, swelling, throbbing, heat, and intensity are symptoms that suggest this remedy. The joints look red, inflamed, and shiny with sharp or violent pains that are worse from touch and jarring. The person may feel restless, flushed, and hot. Berberis vulgaris: Twinges of pain in gouty joints, or stitching pains that are aggravated by changing position or walking, may indicate a need for this remedy. Homeopathy Dosage Directions

Select the remedy that most closely matches the symptoms. In conditions where self-treatment is appropriate, unless otherwise directed by a physician, a lower potency (6X, 6C, 12X, 12C, 30X, or 30C) should be used. In addition, instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.

If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

The following are recommended gout remedies by independent health practitioners:

In addition to Dr. Mark�s recommentdation - - I just did another "liver purge" per Dr. Hulda Clark. One liver-related symptom, present for a few months, was much weaker, after a few evacuations. Also, per Dr. Johanna Budwig�s "Flax Oil as a True Aid Against Arthritis, Heart Infarction, Cancer and Other Diseases" - - . Begin one day after the liver purge with one tablespoon Flaxoil, not fish-oil, with the noon meal. If it gives a problem, reduce to one tea-spoon until habituated. If flax-oil is not available, use a vegetable oil that is cold-pressed extracted, and which contains 50% poly-unsaturated, omega-6 oils. "Gout is one of a number of diseases that affect the joints. In gout, there is too much uric acid in the body. The excess URIC ACID accumulates in certain joints, often the large joint of the big toe. This happens when your body makes too much uric acid, or not enough leaves the body through the urine. People on certain high blood pressure medicines can develop gout. In these people, the medication prevents enough uric acid from leaving the body in the urine. A PURINE-MODIFIED DIET may be suggested for most gout sufferers. Since many PROTEIN foods contain PURINE, it is recommended that the intake of protein NOT exceed 100 grams per day.

There are about 7 grams of protein in an ounce of meat and 3 grams of protein in one serving of grain or bread. 3 ounces of meat is about the size of the palm of an adult's hand, and one serving of grain or bread would be one slice or about one-half cup.

By DECREASING the intake of meat, poultry, fish, and beans, the intake of purine will automatically be decreased. Organ meats, such as liver, brains, kidney, and sweetbreads, are extremely high in purine and need to be ELIMINATED from the diet all together.

Meats and seafoods HIGHEST in purine include:

  • anchovies
  • brains
  • kidney
  • game meats, such as venison, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, duck, and goose
  • herring
  • liver
  • sardines
  • scallops and sweetbreads
Vegetables HIGHEST in purine include:
  • asparagus
  • cauliflower and
  • mushrooms
Milk, eggs, and cheese, are good sources of protein, and do NOT contain high levels of purine.

Diets high in fat and alcohol, as well as very low calorie diets, can lead to more frequent and severe gout attacks.

FOLLOW THESE 8 EATING GUIDELINES IF YOU SUFFER FROM GOUT:
  1. do not eat organ meats like liver, kidney, brains, and sweetbreads
  2. do not eat more than 3 to 4 ounces of meat at each meal
  3. avoid heavy consumption of alcohol
  4. avoid foods high in fat
  5. avoid very low calorie diets
  6. do not take vitamin C supplements
  7. drink 10 to 12 glasses of water a day to promote uric acid excretion and
  8. attempt to maintain a healthy weight (If weight loss is needed, do so gradually, no more than 2 pounds a week, because rapid weight loss can make the symptoms worse.)"

Use non-acidic bromelain capsules such as Bromelain in large amounts, and improve intestinal flora with yogurt or by supplement.  Use an additional antiinflammatory (like Turmeric Rhizome) as needed for pain.  Avoid red meat, red wine, and beer. 

How Does Turmeric Rhizome Work?
Turmeric root has been shown to benefit joints, the liver (by producing substances that increase secretions of bile) and stomach, and may also provide calming benefits during periods of monthly discomfort for women. Turmeric root may be helpful in protecting the body from toxins and free radical damage as it is a powerful antioxidant.

Evidence also suggests that this herb may stabilize microflora, inhibiting yeast overgrowth; plus, turmeric could prevent a condition called blood platelet aggregation which can lead to blood clots.

Curcumin is the active constituent in turmeric root, and that is what gives it its anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin works by blocking certain enzymes, including those that cause excess prostaglandins in women.

Turmeric is derived from the turmeric spice and is a powerful free radical-fighting antioxidant. Curcumin, the active constituent of turmeric, is an antioxidant that may possess benefits for degenerative diseases. Curcumin has also shown a wide range of health-boosting properties, including support for inflammation relief and circulation.

In several studies, curcumin has shown increasing potential as an anti-cancer agent. Curcumin has previously displayed success in protecting against the development of colonic tumors in laboratory animals treated with colon cancer-inducing agents. In a study published in the Journal of Carcinogenesis, curcumin appeared to induce cellular arrest when added to human colon cancer cells. Other studies show that curcumin's anti-cancer effects appear to be due to its ability to induce apoptosis, a predetermined death of cells, as well as to arrest the cell cycle. Other published studies show that curcumin effectively inhibits cancer cell growth in human skin cancer, lung cancer, and prostate cancer cells. Large randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled studies need to be conducted in humans to prove benefits in cancer patients.

Curcumin may hold anti-inflammatory properties, as studies have shown that it may benefit joint function, while reducing inflammation and pain. Curcumin has been shown to reduce inflammation by lowering histamine levels, while possibly increasing the production of natural cortisone by the adrenal glands. This antioxidant has been used in rheumatoid arthritis trials, and was shown to display some benefits for reducing inflammation and symptoms such as pain and stiffness. And in a study published in the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutic Toxicology, curcumin was proven effective at easting post-surgical inflammation.

In studies, curcumin has displayed other health benefits. It has been shown to aid circulation, as it may reduce platelets from clumping together, and may defend against atherosclerosis. Curcumin is also effective at shielding the liver from various toxic compounds. And one recent study showed that curcumin may have some benefit for cystic fibrosis.

The Water Cure is essential.  It should be begun immediately and used long term.  Alcohol and coffee should be avoided, but if they are not, note the instruction "For every 6 ounces of alcoholic beverage or coffee, an additional 10 ounces of water must be drunk due to the dehydrating effects of these."  Using this one simple, cheap method may completely solve the problem in a short time, but if faster action is needed, supplements and other measures can be used.

Also essential, short term or until the current flare-up is gone, is to use Bromelain or other good non-acidic enzymes product - enzymes which contain acidic components such as ox bile or HCL cannot be taken in high enough doses without causing stomach upset.   Use at least double and preferably triple or more recommended dosage with meals to digest protein and between meals to relieve pain and inflammation.  Using enzymes in high dose along with sufficient water is a reliable and quick cure for gout.  

Gout is cause by uric acid crystals.  Besides the painful effects of the glass-like crystals irritating the tissues, sometimes massive inflammation occurs.  Uric acid crystals form from undigested protein so whatever amount of enzymes, which digest protein, is required is taken to prevent further deposition.  Bromelain is a particularly good enzyme to take in this case since it also is a very good anti-inflammatory, relieving pain and inflammation.  It can be taken in as high a dose as necessary.  If one is having to use a very large amount to prevent symptoms, consider adding MegaFood DailyFoods MegaZymes ; it has more protein digesting power for the money, but has less anti-inflammatory action.   

Beneficial bacteria consume uric acid before it is absorbed by the intestines, so gout is usually also an indication of an unbalanced flora.  Consume adequate raw vegetables and fruits.  Eat yogurt if favorable (Horizon or Stoneyfield Farms), or drink Helios Kefir , or you can make your own kefir using Yogourmet Freeze Dried Kefir Starter, 1 Ounce Boxes (Pack of 2) (a yogurt-like drink which replenishes favorable bacteria better than most yogurts that call themselves "kefir").

Rosemary oil used topically, rubbed on the area of inflammation (do not apply to broken skin), can greatly relieve the pain immediately.  If the oil is irritating at all to the skin, dilute with olive oil until it is not.

Despite being the most recommended supplement for gout, cherries are not really that effective except taken in huge amounts and even then, do not work nearly as well as the above regimen and in severe cases, do not appear to provide much immediate benefit.  They are still a healthy supplement in other regards, and can add to the effects of a good regimen.  Bing or black cherries should be used, at least a half pound per day.  Instead, cherry concentrate (extract) can be used.  Cherry Extract that is extremely rich in flavonoids, helps reduce free radicals, offers inflammation support and promotes balanced uric acid levels.

Watermelon seeds are a classic remedy for Gout.  Even without gout, watermelon seeds should be eaten for the nutrients they provide.  Dry seeds are available at some health food or middle eastern markets.

Using enzymes is really a palliative action.  It is an indication that the pancreas or liver are not producing enough, possibly due to a poor diet (too many carbs), lack of nutrients (vitamins and minerals like chromium, calcium, and magnesium), or toxins (metals especially gold, aspertame, plus too much alcohol).   Or, the liver is not producing enough acid to assist digestion due to poor diet (too many carbs and/or not enough protein and good oils), lack of nutrients (especially B vitamins and magnesium), or congestion (toxins and fat or mineral deposits) plus too much alcohol.   The Turmeric & Bromelain can be helpful in this regard since curcumin is a good liver cleanser, but a better choice for liver cleansing is FutureBiotics Silymarin Plus.
